How to Calculate Your Real Customer Acquisition Cost
The customer acquisition cost shown in an ads dashboard is almost always incomplete — it typically only accounts for media spend, leaving out several real costs that belong in the calculation.
Include more than just ad spend
Agency fees, creative production costs, and the tools used to run campaigns are all part of the true cost of acquiring a customer, even though they rarely appear in a platform's own reporting.
Account for return and discount rates
A customer acquired through a heavily discounted first-order promotion costs more, in real terms, than the sticker price suggests once the discount is factored back in against the eventual margin.
Compare CAC against actual customer value, not just first order
A high CAC can still be entirely healthy if the customer's lifetime value is high enough to support it. Looking at acquisition cost in isolation, without the corresponding value side of the equation, leads to decisions that look conservative but are actually leaving growth on the table — or the reverse.
