Google Performance Max: What You Can and Can't Control
Performance Max campaigns hand a lot of control to Google's automation, which makes them either frustrating or freeing depending on how you approach them. The honest answer is that a few real levers still exist — the rest genuinely isn't yours to touch.
What you can control
Asset quality still matters enormously. Strong images, clear value propositions in headlines, and well-structured audience signals give the algorithm a much better starting point. Conversion goal selection also matters — optimizing toward the wrong action (like 'add to cart' instead of 'purchase') will happily deliver you the wrong outcome, efficiently.
What you can't control
You don't get placement-level reporting or manual bid adjustment by channel the way you would with a Search or Display campaign. Trying to fight this by constantly pausing and relaunching campaigns usually resets the learning phase and hurts performance rather than helping it.
The practical approach
Treat PMax as one channel in a broader plan, not the whole plan. Feed it clean data, give it real creative variety, set the right conversion goal, and then let it run long enough to actually learn — interference is usually the biggest self-inflicted problem we see in PMax accounts.
